Our lawn renovation process begins with spraying the areas that are to be renovated with a non-selective herbicide which will eliminate vegetation all the way down to the roots. The product we use is Glyphosate or better known as Roundup. When this product is used according to the label it will be safe to reseed within a few days. We will typically wait 1-2 weeks to let the herbicide work its way through the plant. We feel this is an important first step to ensure you are starting fresh with no weeds or old grass still growing.
- More than half of the lawn is weeds.
- Hard-to-kill perennial weeds such as creeping bentgrass are taking over.
- Summer drought, insects, or a flood has killed the lawn.
- You want to convert to a better-looking and better-performing grass.
- The lawn is more than 10 years old. Older grasses are more
susceptible to diseases and insects than new, improved varieties.
Late Summer is the best time to renovate your lawn. Aug. 15th - Oct. 1st.

Renovating a Lawn in Rhode Island by Always Green
In 1-2 weeks we will return to remove the old lawn down to bare soil with a sod cutter and a Harley rake. Our goal is to remove all the old grass and weeds which lead to the decline of what was once a nice lawn. This will also ensure you only have newer varieties of grass that is much more disease resistant and drought tolerant than your old lawn.
Once the old lawn is removed we will incorporate 1-2" of fresh topsoil that is rich in nutrients and high in organic matter. This soil has been tested at an independent soil testing lab to ensure it will produce the best stand of turf possible. It will condition the existing soil to improve nutrient and water holding capacity. It is possible to just hydroseed on top of the old soil but we feel the topsoil we use really improves the stand of turf and long term heath of the lawn.
Now we are ready to Hydroseed!
After Herbicide was applied.
After soil was power raked.
You can Google other ways on how to renovate a lawn and instead of planting your own seeding call us to Hydroseed instead. Always Green will only renovate a lawn taking the steps described above for best results. There are more steps, time and materials involved with a total lawn renovation so we would need to come out and see your lawn before we can quote a price. Typically renovations start around $ 895.00 for a 1500 square foot lawn.
Nutrient rich topsoil is used to improve the existing soil.
Glyphosate is being applied.
